Learning Disability Programme

Adults with Learning Disabilities often face physical and medical as well as mental challenges. The Learning Disability Programme offers these clients comprehensive services both at the New Dimensions Day Centre and in the community. Three residential units at the hospital provide 24-hour care to long-stay clients. In addition, a matrix of community homes provide the opportunity for our clients to live in the least restrictive possible setting and function as a part of the community.

Bayview House residents are classed as having dependency needs. These needs can have health, social, educational and psychological origins. A multidisciplinary team addresses these needs through activities such as cooking groups, computer work, art classes, walks and community outings and recreational therapy.

Coral House residents are both mentally and physically challenged. Most are non-ambulatory and require wheelchair assistance. Recognising the special needs of these individuals, a multidisciplinary team meets regularly to develop opportunities to partake in normal everyday experiences.

Sandpiper House is home to clients whose challenges centre on communication difficulties that often result in frustration and agitation. Many display some form of obsessive or compulsive behavior. Treatment is targeted at preparing the clients for community living, community experiences and viable occupations.

Community Homes – Our Community Service began in 1993. Today we have ten homes, all of which are staffed by Live-In Coordinators. Additional support to the 32 learning disabled clients living in group homes is provided by Community Support Workers.
