Home : BHB Information : Initiatives in Progress : KEMH Redevelopment Project : Introduction

What’s Happening Now?

BHB has approval to build a new facility to house a variety of acute care services, including 90 single-patient rooms, a new emergency department, diagnostic imaging, and ambulatory care services including oncology, same-day surgery and dialysis over the next several years on the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) site. The new building will be on Point Finger Road. The construction zone identified by BHB is the area from the “old hospital” entrance along Point Finger Road to Gladwyn House (# 9) and Banana Patch (#11/#13).

At the same time BHB is upgrading the existing KEMH hospital building and has undertaken certain enabling works that will allow the site of the new building to be cleared. Examples of enabling work include the construction of a new parking lot and new electrical substation at the corner of Point Finger Rd. and Berry Hill Rd. These will be used to replace, in advance, the parking lots and substation that are currently in the midst of the new building’s construction zone and will therefore need to be demolished around the end of this year.

Together, the new and upgraded facilities will offer the additional acute care space required to provide Bermuda with the services it needs. The entire project is called the KEMH Redevelopment Project.

What’s Happening Now?

Electrical installation and mechanical works for the BELCO substation is continuing. Block work for the walls is nearing completion and roof work will commence the week of 12 July. Trenching and excavation for retaining walls, cabling and drainage will continue.

The contractor has indicated that no Sunday work is expected for 11 July and 18 July. No significant road disruptions are anticipated at this time.
