Bermuda Hospitals Board Announces Scholarship Winners

(Hamilton, Bermuda, July 27, 2010)

Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) is awarding scholarships totaling $230,000.00, to be paid over the next four years, to nine students pursuing degrees in healthcare.

Five scholarship winners are pursuing nursing degrees, two are studying physiotherapy, one is earning a degree in pharmacy and one is studying diagnostic imaging. The scholarship winners have all demonstrated a strong commitment to service in the community and the hospitals, as well as maintaining a solid academic performance.

Kerry Garrigan, Vice-President of Human Resources comments: “On behalf of BHB, I congratulate these young people for their vital contribution to our community. We are competing in a global market with a shortage of medical professionals. Bermuda Hospitals Board is committed to supporting Bermudian students pursuing careers in healthcare.”

David Hill, CEO, says: “These students are Bermuda’s future healthcare professionals and we wish them well in their studies. We are grateful for their decision to commit to a challenging and rewarding career in healthcare. We are pleased to be providing financial support as they take the next step towards exciting and rewarding professions.”

Herman Tucker, BHB Chairman adds: “By offering scholarships to our students, the Board has made educating and training Bermudians a priority. This is critical to the long term wellbeing of the hospitals and our ability to deliver sustained, excellent care in the future. I am proud of the personal dedication these scholarship winners have made to education and the impact their efforts will have on quality patient care at the hospitals.”

The scholarship winners are:

Pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing:
• Khamani Fox, attending Barry University
• Natasha Simmons, attending Hampton University
• Shandel Doars, attending Howard University
• Samae Williams, attending Old Dominion University
• LeRhonda Mills, attending Delaware College

Pursuing a Master of Science degree in Pharmacy:
• Christia Swan, attending University of Bath

Pursuing a Master of Science degree in Physiotherapy:
• Bruno Teixeira, attending Keele University
• G’nae Everheart, attending Queen Margaret University

Pursuing an Associate degree in Diagnostic Imaging:
• Sherie Jones, attending Keiser University
