Bermuda Hospitals Board Awarded Scholarships to Five Students
(Hamilton, Bermuda, September 22, 2011)
Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) awarded scholarships totalling $90,000 (paid over time periods from one to three years) to five students pursuing degrees in healthcare. In addition, GlaxoSmithKline is awarding one student with a $30,000 scholarship.
Three scholarship winners are pursuing nursing degrees, one is studying radiology and one is earning a degree in social work. The student funded by GlaxoSmithKline is pursuing a Master’s degree in pharmacy. The scholarship winners have all demonstrated a strong commitment to service in the community and the hospitals, as well as maintaining a solid academic performance.
Lynae Joseph, Career Development Coordinator says: “The hospitals are committed to supporting Bermudian students who choose careers in healthcare. We are very proud to provide scholarships to this year’s winners and congratulate them for their important contribution to our community. We are competing in a global market with a shortage of medical professionals and we recognize the value these young people are bringing to Bermuda by becoming healthcare workers.”
David Hill, CEO, says: “These students are the hospitals’ future healthcare professionals and we wish them well as they take the next step towards exciting and rewarding professions. I would also like to pay tribute to GlaxoSmithKline for supporting our students and offering $30,000 to one of our scholarship winners.”
Herman Tucker, BHB Chairman adds: “We set aside a sizeable portion of money for the scholarship programme as the importance of attracting Bermudians into healthcare is critical to the long term wellbeing of the hospitals and its ability to deliver sustained excellent quality care in the years to come. I congratulate the students and look forward to the successful completion of their studies.”
