Bermuda Medical Students’ Society Announce New Executive

(Hamilton, Bermuda, August 31, 2012)

The Bermuda Medical Students’ Society (BMSS) today announces the establishment of a new Executive Board. Supported by BHB, the BMSS was established in 2010 to counsel and assist Bermudian medical students in all phases of training as they progress through their requirements and seek job placements as physicians. It was developed and continues to be run by Bermudian medical students.

The new Chair is Asha Ratteray, a second year student at the University of West Indies in Jamaica. Public Relations for the BMSS will be managed by Jasmin Caines, a third year student at Ross University. Emma Knight is enrolled in her first year at St.Georges University, London and will be undertaking the role of Membership Director. Executive Committee Members also include Stephen Kenny, a second year student at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Amne Foggo, who is in her third year at the University of West Indies.

Continuing as Advisors to the BMSS Executive Board are Dr Arlene Basden, Director, Hospitalist Services, at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital and Dr Chantelle Simmons, Chief of Psychiatry at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute. Other BHB advisors include Mrs Venetta Symonds, President & CEO; Dr Victor Scott, Interim Chief of Staff; Dr. Keith Chiappa, Consultant Neurologist; Harlean Saunders Fox, VP-Medical Operations; and Mrs Debrah Byrd, Manager of Workforce Development & Planning.

The BMSS is asking any newly-admitted or currently-enrolled medical students interested in joining, or becoming part of the society to e-mail: bermymss@gmail.com, or look up Bermuda Medical Students’ Society on Facebook. Membership is free.

Ms Ratteray comments: “The BMSS remains committed to counselling and assisting Bermudian medical students as they advance in their training. We are excited to further the mandate of the BMSS in networking, mentoring and disseminating resources among local medical students. In the upcoming year, we aim to develop a mentorship program for our members and facilitate the exchange of resources for medical students, including scholarships. I believe the new committee will have so much to offer the members of the BMSS, as we are medical students coming from a wide range of educational backgrounds, including the Caribbean, United States and the United Kingdom. So we are inviting all medical students to come on board with us so we can work together, helping one another as we progress through our medical training.”

The most recent event held by the BMSS included a Speed Networking Event in 2011 where students got to meet with the chiefs of the departments from various medical specialties at BHB. The next event to be held during the 2012 Christmas holiday will feature a mentorship program between physicians and students. Bermuda medical students are advised to look out for information in the near future. Details will be released in advance of the event, and all information will be posted to the BMSS Facebook page.
