The Importance of Diagnosing “Pre-Diabetes”
If caught before high blood sugar develops into diabetes, changes in diet and exercise can prevent the onset of the disease. The American Diabetes Association recommends that everyone be tested annually for high blood sugar. The most reliable test is the glucose tolerance test.
Know the Symptoms:
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Thirst
- Tiredness, frequently fall asleep
- Irritability
- Blurred vision
- Difficulty clearing up infections
- Women: vaginal itching
- Weight loss is a significant symptom of Type 1 diabetes
Weight gain, along with feelings of depression and unsatisfied hunger, are significant symptoms of Type 2 diabetes. More than ¾ of Bermudian adults diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes are obese or overweight.
