Flu 2009
Flu refers to illnesses caused by a number of different influenza viruses. Two strains of flu, seasonal flu and the H1N1 (Swine) flu are currently circulating. Seasonal flu (also known as influenza) occurs every year, usually during the winter months.
All flu viruses are spread from human to human through coughing and sneezing, and when someone touches something with flu viruses on it then touches their mouth or nose.
Prevention
Get vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. The seasonal flu vaccine is different from the H1N1 (Swine) flu vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is encouraging people to get both vaccinations.
Take these everyday steps to protect your health:
- Cough or Sneeze into a bended elbow or tissue. Throw the tissue away immediately.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
